WonHundred Word Wednesday Flash Fiction

Lexi believed in ghosts. She had never seen one but she was sure they existed because her father claimed he had. The ghost had floated above his grandfather’s headstone and warned him not to marry his high school sweetheart. Dad chuckled whenever he told the story because he took his grandfather’s advice. He went on a mission instead and it blessed his life. Now Lexi pondered the same question. Mission or marriage? She decided to go to her father’s grave to ask his advice. “What should I do, Dad?” No phantom appeared but the Holy Ghost whispered to her heart.

School Starts Tomorrow

I teach art at the local elementary school. So much fun! A challenge, too, because I teach all the grades from kindergarten to fifth grade. Tomorrow the children will draw the Bear Lake Monster--a tradition for the first day of school. My classroom was painted during the summer. What do you think? The kids will probably love it.

Wonhundred Word Wednesday

It's Wondhundred Word Wednesday--Flash Fiction Day! I'm excited to be included in the fun.  A group of writers have all been given the same prompt. After reading mine, click on the links and read the others!

He had waited twenty years to return it. All that time the tooth lay hidden in his sock drawer.
     “What’s that?” his wife asked.
“A shark’s tooth on a chain.” He held it up for her to see. “I’m going to return it to Ron tonight.”
“At the reunion?” She fingered the sharp, triangular tooth.
     “I stole it.”
     She frowned. “Why?”
“Ron found it on the beach in Hawaii and I wanted it. I wanted everything he had.”
“Including his girlfriend.” She winked. “My husband, the thief.”
     “Still love me?”

She kissed his cheek. “Give him the tooth—I’m yours.”

A Lake Poem

Last year I went on a poetry retreat to Bear Lake. I loved sitting by the lake shore in the evening, listening to the waves. It was especially fun being with my poet friends. We hope to do it again this year.

The Lake Calls

Listening to the wind

And the calming purr of the waves

I’m alone

With the water, the wind and the waves.

Walking back to join my friends

The sand tugs at my sandals

Begging me to stay.

Summer Fun

I took a long road trip last month and my muse tagged along. So much fun! My fingers flew on the alphasmart (small word processor) while I brainstormed ideas for two new books. My daughter drove and I rode shotgun. We had so much fun naming characters, plotting conflicts and playing Cupid with their love lives. I've started writing one of the books. Woot! Woot! It's good to be writing NEW words after spending so much time editing my Quest series. Professional writers work on several projects at the same time. It's a challenge, but stimulating as well.  Organization is the key. Have you ever written more than one book at a time? Any suggestions?

Welcome to my blog! Catchin’ up with Kaye is where I keep readers up to date on my work in progress—The Quest for Zarahemla series.

The books are historical novels based on events in the Book of Mormon, when Lamanites conquered the land of Nephi and just as the prophet Abinadi had predicted, the Nephite people became enslaved to their Lamanite overlords. Though wicked King Noah had been burned at the stake, Amulon and the priests became raiders, preying on the helpless Nephites. The renegade priests captured a group of Lamanite maidens and took them as wives. Wars, pestilence and famine plagued the Nephites.

King Limhi, Noah’s son, was a godly man. Desperate to find help for his people, he sent a search party to locate the lost city of Zarahemla. He hoped the Zarahemlans would send aid to the Land of Nephi. After many days in the wilderness, the searchers found what remained of a ruined civilization. Bones and rusted armor littered a battlefield. It appeared the city of Zarahemla had been destroyed. Imagine their disappointment. Their mission had failed. (You’ll find the whole story recorded in the book of Mosiah in the Book of Mormon.)

The quest for Zarahemla stirred my curiosity. What if King Limhi had sent boys to find the lost city because there were already too many widows and fatherless children in the Land of Nephi? Think of the adventure—the risk and danger.

It’s just the kind of story I like to read. So I wrote it. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it, too.
